Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Petfied, ESA letters, psychiatric service dogs, and our services.
1 What types of pets can I book care for?
We provide care for dogs and cats, and in many areas we also accommodate small pets such as rabbits, birds, and other household animals. You can select your pet type when booking, and we’ll match you with a caregiver who has experience with your pet.
2 Can an emotional support animal help with anxiety or depression?
Yes. Research shows that emotional support animals can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions by providing companionship, routine, and unconditional emotional support.
3 Is an ESA letter from Petfied valid in {state}?
Yes. Petfied connects you with licensed mental health professionals who can evaluate your need and, if appropriate, provide an ESA letter that is compliant with federal and {state} state laws, including the Fair Housing Act.
4 What is a PSD letter?
A PSD letter is a document from a licensed mental health professional that states you have a psychiatric disability and may benefit from a psychiatric service dog trained to perform specific tasks related to your condition.
5 Is an ESA the same as a service dog?
No. Emotional support animals provide comfort through companionship but are not trained to perform specific tasks. Service dogs, including psychiatric service dogs (PSDs), are individually trained to perform tasks that directly relate to a person’s disability. This distinction affects their legal protections and where they are allowed.
6 What animals can be emotional support animals?
While dogs and cats are the most common, almost any domesticated animal can serve as an emotional support animal. The key requirement is that the animal provides emotional comfort and support, and that a licensed mental health professional has determined this benefit through a proper evaluation.
7 Can I fly with my emotional support animal?
Since 2021, most US airlines no longer recognize ESAs for free cabin travel. However, some international airlines like LATAM and Volaris still allow ESAs. For domestic travel, you can typically fly with your pet for a fee, or consider qualifying for a psychiatric service dog which retains full flight rights.
8 What qualifies as a mental health disability for an ESA?
Common qualifying conditions include generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, PTSD, panic disorder, social anxiety, OCD, and other conditions recognized in the DSM-5. A licensed mental health professional determines eligibility during your evaluation.
9 Does my ESA need special training?
No. Unlike psychiatric service dogs, emotional support animals are not required to have any specific task training. However, your ESA should be well-behaved, housebroken, and not pose a threat to others. Basic obedience training is always recommended.
10 Do ESAs have public-access rights?
Generally, no. ESAs are not granted public-access rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, they are protected under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), which allows them in housing that otherwise has a no-pet policy, provided you have a valid ESA letter from a licensed mental health professional.
11 How do I know if a caregiver is qualified?
All caregivers on Petfied undergo a thorough vetting process that includes identity verification, background checks, and reviews of their experience with animals. You can also read reviews from other pet parents before booking.
12 Is a PSD letter the same as an ESA letter?
No. A PSD letter supports the need for a psychiatric service dog that is individually trained to perform disability-related tasks. An ESA letter is for an emotional support animal that provides comfort through companionship but does not require specific task training.
13 Can psychiatric service dogs fly for free?
Yes. Under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), psychiatric service dogs are recognized as service animals and can fly in the cabin at no additional cost. Airlines may require you to complete a DOT service animal form prior to travel.
14 How long does it take to get an ESA letter?
Most evaluations are completed within 24 to 48 hours. After your licensed professional approves your ESA letter, you will receive it digitally so you can start using it right away.
15 Can I use my ESA letter for housing in {state}?
Yes. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords in {state} are required to make reasonable accommodations for tenants with a valid ESA letter, even in housing with no-pet policies.
16 What does the booking process look like?
Simply browse available caregivers in your area, select the service you need, choose your preferred date and time, and confirm your booking. You’ll receive a confirmation and can communicate directly with your caregiver.
17 Can my landlord charge a pet deposit for my ESA?
No. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords cannot charge pet deposits, pet rent, or breed-based fees for emotional support animals. An ESA is not considered a pet under fair housing law, and requiring these charges is a violation of federal law.
18 What changed with airline ESA policies in 2021?
In January 2021, the US Department of Transportation revised the Air Carrier Access Act, allowing airlines to treat ESAs as regular pets. Most major US airlines, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest, subsequently stopped recognizing ESAs for free cabin travel.
19 Does a letter automatically make my dog a service dog?
No. A letter alone does not make a dog a service dog. The dog must also be individually trained to perform work or tasks directly related to your psychiatric disability. Requirements and protections can vary by applicable laws.
20 What training does a psychiatric service dog need?
A psychiatric service dog must be individually trained to perform at least one specific task directly related to the handler’s psychiatric disability. Examples include alerting to anxiety attacks, providing deep pressure therapy, interrupting self-harm behaviors, or reminding the handler to take medication. There is no requirement for professional training — owner-training is allowed.
